Freqently Asked Questions

Why is this sort of ministry called "tentmaking"?

Paul travelled on some of his missionary journeys practising the trade of tentmaking. This trade established him within the community; the quality of his work and his business practice demonstrated his  integrity: while his earnings made him financially self-sufficient. Christians who today work in another culture and bear witness to Jesus through their distinctive lifestyle are called tentmakers following Paul's pattern. Some prefer not to use the term - and that's fine - but the approach is Biblically valid and increasingly important today as countries close their borders to conventional mission. It is of course valid in open countries as well and could be said to be the most         natural way of living in another culture.

In what capacities do such people go overseas?

Students in foreign universities, language teachers, medical staff, engineers, bankers,- the list in endless. And today more and more are going in businesses - setting up companies, creating employment, training in management etc.

What ages are these people?

All ages. Young people early in their careers, families, retired people - some countries particularly value senior citizens. Redundancy may be the spur to put years of experience to good use in another country.

Are tentmakers undercover missionaries?

No. They are men and women of integrity, employed in real jobs, who share their living faith by living out the good news of Jesus in a foreign culture.

Do we work with churches?

Yes. we consider that churches have the key role in identifying,  affirming, and encouraging those whom God calls to such service. They will also have a part in preparation, and thus we seek to work with churches wherever possible.

What if I do not have a supportive church?

We feel it is important to find a church that is ready to care for you. There are situations, eg following university, when this may be difficult, and TASK will do what it can to help.

Will I receive help will I finally get overseas?

Yes. We shall do what we can to link with you, and to help and encourage. Indeed,TASK is very much an encouragement ministry.

What do the letters of TASK stand for?

Training and Advice for Service in the Kingdom. It is usually      referred to simply as TASK
